We have finished our first   Supporting Early Learning for Families Program ( SELF )

A big thank you to the parents who took the time to give us their feedback and reflections on their learning.   From measures we used pre and post SELF there have  been significant shifts in parents skill levels around the goals  and a reduction in parental stress measures and we are very happy with these results.   Further analysis of  the measures we used will be undertaken  however we do know that as children spend so much time with their parents and the way that parents and caregivers engage children is critical for their overall development a program that supports parents effectively is very good news in relation to child progress and outcomes!

5 Families participated in SELF for this first program. The children’s ages ranged from 2 through to 5 and children’s diagnosis  included Autism, Global Developmental delay, as well as children who did not have a diagnosis as such but were presenting with speech and communication delays, sensory processing challenges.

“  The SELF program is an amazing opportunity to gain a greater understanding of your child and learn the best strategies to promote their progress through play. Kathy and Anne run the programme with so much knowledge and experience that is evident in all of the training sessions. Initially I was a bit hesitant at the thought of being recorded however as soon as the first session was complete, I realised how beneficial it was to watch the recording and learn from it.  The group parent sessions are also great as you relate your experiences and reflect on learning.  I could relate to those younger than my child through similar experience and I also have hope when seeing the progress of those older than my child                                                                                                                                                                                                                              E mother of 4 year old child with Global Developmental Delay Diagnosis 

” The program was quite intense. But this intensity gives such huge learning rewards.  e.g. you and your child will be working with two experiences professionals at the same time. You will watch yourself on video and share learnings with the group. ” The most important thing I gained from SELF is that I learned  to adapt my style to still be very influential to my child.   • An incredibly gentle approach that is also incredibly effective
  • Effective learning with my child that is built on working with their strengths
  • Really listening and observing my child.
  • How to calm and regulate my child’s emotions through understanding them better
  • Having a greater understanding of my child’s developmental level and individual differences has made it clear why he behaves in certain ways and what strategies to use to get him to settle and play

  • How to interact with my child and how to communicate during play narrating rather than asking questions, naming his actions and ideas and being physically involved
  • How to help my child with motor planning, support him to extend his ideas, showing him what he can do, using “ first and then steps
  • The therapists provide a very safe learning environment
  • SELF training will show you how to play with your child at their level and build on their strengths.
  • Play can make a big difference
  • If parents are struggling to engage with their child and to understand them  – SELF is the perfect course
  • You spend the most time with your child so you can make a big difference
